Deep in the bustling serpentine streets of Udaipur is the Kaladwas Lal Haveli, a charming oasis in the middle of the historic city. A 300-year-old symphony of stone and wood, a visit to the haveli surreally transports visitors back to a bygone era - of warriors and kings, of craftsmen and artists - when Udaipur was not only the heart of the kingdom but the Mewari bastion of art and culture.
The Kaladwas Lal Haveli, barely a stone’s throw away from the City Palace of Udaipur, is an architectural delight – complete with its historic facade and serene interiors. Lying as it does in the historic core of the city, the haveli overlooks the iconic Clock Tower, and is very close to other landmarks like Jagdish Mandir, Ghanta Ghar, and the serene ghats of Lake Pichola.
Built by and lovingly maintained by the Chawra family of Varsoda, this community of warriors and leaders can trace their lineage to the times of the Maharana and have even served in the Second World War. They were entrusted with the administration of the Kaladwas village and have over the ages been the torchbearers of Mewari tradition and culture. Even today members of the family are involved in the day to day running of the haveli – now operational as a boutique heritage hotel.
