Anuj and Anand Ambalal, sons of renowned artist Amit Ambalal established a design studio A Cube Inc. in 2004. The Ahmedabad-based studio crafts bespoke wooden furniture - experimenting at the cusp of art and design. At A Cube Inc., asking questions is considered integral to the design process, and helps not only in arriving at successful design solutions, but also in keeping the process fun. Though the brothers spend a lot of time on the ideation phase, they passionately believe that the best design decisions come from creative intuition.

For the Ambalals, practice is th very exploration of the word ‘design’, balancing innovation with tradition to create objects of both beauty and function. In their design studio A Cube Inc., they pose a range of inquiries, primarily encircling furniture design. A brainchild of the brothers Anuj and Anand Ambalal (sons of the artist Amit Ambalal), and the master craftsman Prabhudas Mistry, the studio was set up in Ahmedabad in the year 2004. Asking questions is more a part of their design process, and adding their own whimsies and wit comes naturally to the brothers. The result therefore is not about only seeking solutions to design furniture. For instance, since their particular interest lies in defining the contemporary vernacular, they do not shy away from asking various ontological questions that provide them the desired design fuel. At A Cube Inc., they firmly believe that basic questions are crucial guides to arriving at successful design solutions.

The experimental nature of the studio was in its very foundation, what the brothers dearly recall as a creative impulse. Both “armed” with their business degrees, continue to recount with passion that even after two decades, certain design decisions are best made with the creative intuition. Their studio is an extension of their close-knit family; mornings start with tea, shared discussions with their artist father, Amit Ambalal, and lively exchanges of ideas. These talks, which tackle everything from creative blocks to design critiques, transform the studio into a collaborative laboratory where differing opinions are celebrated as sources of inspiration rather than mere disagreements in design decisions.
