Rekha Rodwittiya is an acclaimed artist, curator, and educator from the Baroda school of art. Over the five decades of her career, she has participated in multiple solo exhibitions and group shows worldwide, with her works exhibited in cities such as London, New York, Stockholm, São Paulo, and Venice. Along with an unapologetically feminist mindset, Rodwittiya’s creations are seen to redefine the representation of the female figure in art.

Baroda-based Rekha Rodwittiya is a dominant force on the contemporary Indian art scene. Widely known for her allegorical paintings and surreal painting style, Rodwittiya studied at the Baroda School at a time when powerful artists like Bhupen Khakkar, Gulam Mohammad Shaikh, and Jyoti Bhatt were in their prime. Learning from these gurus and endowed with her own unique sensibilities, Rodwittiya eventually established her own signature style.

Rodwittiya's work showcases life and living – from her own perspective. Her opinions, however vitriolic or controversial they may be, are hers – and she owns them through her art. In this conversation with INSITE, the artist shares a gist of her journey so far…
