Q.1. Describe your journey towards the founding of Bonton.
It was 1992, I was working with my father (who was a renowned electrical contractor in our state) after completing my diploma in mechanical engineering in 1989. We decided to make an office for ourselves, and at various stages during the work, I felt that there is a huge gap in the furniture market. Whatever we needed was not available in the market and only I realized that there are very few organised players in the market.
After completing my diploma, I was on the lookout for starting some manufacturing business which could align to my father’s business; as I thought it would be wiser to build on his reputation in the industry. Ultimately after not getting many options, and seeing lot of potential in the readymade furniture business, I decided to get into furniture manufacturing.
I started Bonton Furniture on the Ganesh Chaturdarshi of 1992 with two workers and a working capital of only INR 20,000! Today we have grown into a team of 350 staff members and a company with a turnover of INR 117 crores!
Q.2. How did the Indian market respond to the new and stylish furniture range across your segments of workspace, education and retail?
Indian customers always appreciate new styles and designs but they are also very conscious about quality and price of the product. We also realized the demand for turnkey solutions; so we added that to our offerings. By this the customer gets a hassle-free design and execution for his space – whether it is an office, an educational institute, a retail space, or even a theatre. Each and every aspect of the process is handled by our team.
