Until about two decades ago, the Indian furniture industry was an unorganized sector; with unavailability of quality furniture, acute lack of innovation in style, and scarcity of premium quality raw materials. That opened up doors for products from China, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Cheaper than traditional carpenter-made furniture, without the hassle of finding the right design and craftsmen, and conveniently available at retail stores very smartly located in malls with a high footfall – were the primary factors for the quick success of this option. It took a few years for the average buyer to understand the low quality and low durability of the cheaper furniture. Ergonomics – the most important aspect of furniture design was heavily compromised in these imported items.
The entry of a few players like Kochi-based Dtale Décor – a brainchild of Sreejith Pathangalil, started to shift the industry’s focus back to the Indian craftsman, and set out to provide an alternative that blended exceptional craftsmanship with practical, ergonomic design. Coincidentally the vision of the founder Sreejith also synced with the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
