One would think there are challenges only in designing homes on constricted plots with adjacent buildings, or facing a road, or with views of an ugly structure; but actually, having a very large plot and no restrictions poses some unique challenges as well. How each designer responds to the challenge - addressing varied parameters such as client’s brief and budget, or other impacting aspects such as directional positioning, cross ventilation, and use of sustainable technologies – makes the difference.
In this design for a home on a sprawling plot in Ahmedabad, the clients required a space where they could hold their formal professional meetings through the week, and over the weekends and festival time, they wished to use the same space to socialize and enjoy with the kids and the extended family. “The project was unique, it was about creating a third place in architecture; and simultaneously one needed to conceal the dichotomy of formal and informal expression of spaces,” says Vipuja, the lead architect of the project. “Conceptually, we decided to create a cuboidal glass box – keeping it very simple, pure and generic in its form. This simplicity allows flexibility of use within the designed volume; as required by the client. Further, placing the glass box at one edge of the site allows an occupant to connect with the vast vista of the open green expanse ahead.”
