Arvind Sundar’s recently concluded exhibition, COSMOS, at the Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art Gallery in Colaba, Mumbai is more than a collection of artworks; it is a meditation on how we experience and interpret the hidden structures of reality. The transition from flat, two-dimensional grids to three-dimensional structures - from painting to sculpture - and his ongoing exploration of the divine nature of geometric forms is captured here.
Known for his precise exploration of sacred geometry, Sundar uses mathematical systems like the Golden Ratio and Fibonacci numbers as starting points for creative experimentation, pushing beyond the boundaries of the flat canvas into three-dimensional spaces. As an artist, Sundar explores the connection between form and essence, creating artworks that invite reflection and introspection.
The transition, according to Sundar, has been inspired by the landscape of Hampi, and it came about while he was in residence at Hampi Art Labs – an initiative by the JSW Foundation. “As an artist who is interested in mathematics and geometry, Hampi made me think and research into the concept of infinity. All the works in the exhibition point towards infinity in one way or another.”
