A CEPT graduate, Ar. Prashant Pradhan went back to his homeland Sikkim to set up his independent practice - a multidisciplinary studio Prashant Pradhan Architects (PPA) in Gangtok. The design philosophy of being rooted in the context of the site reflects in all the work done by the studio. Here, we present one of the studio’s finest hospitality projects – and Sikkim’s first luxury hotel - Taj Vivanta, Pakyong.

The cascading mountains of Sikkim have been the pastoral wonderland of paddy cultivation since the advent of farming - with gentle, terraced fields gracefully adapting the agriculture practice to give birth to a lush green landscape. Most of the organized paddy farming is carefully planned in the rural countryside across the state, and harvested twice a year. Within this delightful landscape is the site for Taj Vivanta at Pakyong - 31 kilometres from the main city of Gangtok. This hotel project is rooted in the topographical adaptation of the mountains it sits on - stepped, open, and natural. Being the first luxury hotel in the state of Sikkim was both a challenge as well as an opportunity to set an example - and Prashant Pradhan Architects (PPA) rose to the occasion.
