The cascading mountains of Sikkim have been the pastoral wonderland of paddy cultivation since the advent of farming - with gentle, terraced fields gracefully adapting the agriculture practice to give birth to a lush green landscape. Most of the organized paddy farming is carefully planned in the rural countryside across the state, and harvested twice a year. Within this delightful landscape is the site for Taj Vivanta at Pakyong - 31 kilometres from the main city of Gangtok. This hotel project is rooted in the topographical adaptation of the mountains it sits on - stepped, open, and natural. Being the first luxury hotel in the state of Sikkim was both a challenge as well as an opportunity to set an example - and Prashant Pradhan Architects (PPA) rose to the occasion.
