Vinu Daniel, the Kerala-based visionary architect behind Wallmakers, is redefining sustainable design with raw earth and discarded materials. A graduate of the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, he rejected conventional practice to embrace a radical, eco conscious philosophy - using low-impact construction, with techniques like compressed earth blocks and debris repurposing. Rebuilding the St George Orthodox church is amongst Daniel’s most prestigious and pathbreaking works.

Rebuilding a historical sacred space is never just an architectural challenge - it is an act of faith, preservation, and reverence. The rebirth of St George Orthodox Church exemplifies what is architecturally possible when sustainability is not an afterthought, but a guiding principle. This 400-yearold site has been given a new lease of life; a bold reinterpretation of what sacred architecture can be in an age of climate consciousness and material innovation.

The choice of rammed earth and compressed earth blocks was not just an aesthetic or structural decision, it was an ethical one. Modern construction materials are energy intensive, and their environmental cost is often overlooked. Ar. Vinu Daniel, trained at the Auroville Earth Institute, saw this as an opportunity to redefine how religious spaces could be built; with minimal environmental impact and deep-rooted material honesty.

Construction being one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions, every material choice matters. Compared to conventional country fired bricks, CSEB has an embodied energy nearly four times lower, meaning it requires far less energy to produce. This, in turn, results in four times fewer carbon emissions, making it a far more responsible alternative.
