Ar. Hiren Patel – founder of the Ahmedabad-based HPA – is one of the most successful and iconic personalities in Indian architecture. The versatile designer’s ingenuity, his intuitive and honest approach to his chosen craft along with a rare type of passion and integrity, leads to architecture that is more like a spiritual, soulful melody…
Drawn to the world of art and design since a very young age, Patel’s inspiration to study architecture came from within his family. “My father was a town planner,” says Patel. “My elder brothers are civil engineers, and I saw them making models when I was in school.” Being more creative, he was perhaps naturally drawn to the idea of designing beautiful spaces rather than getting structures built.
After graduating as an architect from CEPT University in 1983, Patel went on to get work experience, and eventually established his own studio Hiren Patel Architects (HPA) in Ahmedabad, in 1989. The studio spans across architecture, interior design and landscaping; and has produced some really inspiring work over the past almost four decades. The prolific practice has gone hand-in-hand with Patel’s intrinsic talent for art – and he has consistently stayed tuned to both his passions.
