For many architects around the world – particularly the passionate and dedicated ones – architecture is more of a calling than a career choice. Many people that study architecture, are drawn to the idea of making a lasting impact on the world, of creating something that endures and improves lives, and fosters a connection with the community.
Over time, architects can gravitate towards a particular genre or style that aligns with their personal values, interests, or vision for the built environment. In an architectural sense, this philosophy stems from certain beliefs about how space should be used and experienced, and how it should interact with the environment. An architect’s background, cultural heritage, or the region they work in can significantly influence their preferences.
The story of Ar. Shimul Javeri Kadri too begins with a ‘calling’. At age thirteen, she knew she wanted to study architecture. The strong calling and conviction led her to joining the Academy of Architecture in 1980; and further going on to study urban planning at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. After a brief work experience in California, Kadri returned to India and set up SJK Architects in 1990.
