With a Diploma in Fine Arts & Modelling from Karnataka Chithra Kala Parishad, Dr. M. S. Murthy was conferred an honorary Doctorate from the Kannada University, Hampi. He won the International Biennial Award from the Iran Academy of Arts in 2003 and Karnataka Sahithya Academy Award in 2006, while the Government of Karnataka bestowed him with the Rajyotsava Award in 2010, and with Lifetime achievement Award, in 2017. Featured here is a series of paintings on Mahatma Gandhi – a brilliant depiction of the life and times of the Father of the Nation.

Thanks to the social media platforms, I got connected with a soft spoken artist from Bangalore, Dr. M. S. Murthy about a year ago. My deep interest in art and artists led me to further explore about him on the internet and I discovered a multitalented artist, who primarily works with watercolours but is an excellent sculptor, muralist and writer too! I recently spoke to this low-profile artist to understand him better. This interaction gave me deep insight into this down-to-earth man, trying to explain his approach to life and creativity; to art and the monetisation of art and many other things.

The conversation started with his famous Ganesha paintings, which are abstract renderings of the muchadored, elephant-headed God. The series on Ganesha is, in one word, fascinating! I was surprised to know that even many foreigners are fans of his Ganesha paintings and have it in their collections - although they are Christians! To me, that’s the power of art!
