A Step Into the Past

Kaladwas Lal Haveli, Udaipur

A prime specimen of 18th-century Rajasthani architecture, the Kaladwas Lal Haveli was built by and has been lovingly maintained by the Chawra family of Varsoda. The haveli was restored by a team of heritage experts and skilled artisans who ensured that every detail, from structural reinforcements to intricate carvings, stayed true to the haveli’s original character. Parakram Singh Chawra, the present-day custodian of the haveli, has steered it to offer visitors an immersive experience of authentic Mewari culture and hospitality.

Prof. Charanjit Singh Shah is a prominent figure in modern Indian architecture, renowned for his sustainable designs that span over five decades. The founding principal of Creative Group, his work reflects a deep respect for the environment, cultural landscapes, and responsible design principles. Blending modern innovations with local heritage, his projects range from airports to public infrastructure and educational campuses. Ar. Gurpreet Singh Shah after finishing his M. Arch in Urban Design from Columbia University decided to join Creative Group, later adding his own insights; while never losing sight of the practice’s core ideology of sustainable design and infrastructure. His visionary approach has led the firm to win several national and international design competitions. Together, they lead the Creative Group team to shape cities and communities for the future, balancing modern technology with cultural preservation.

Gauri Wagenaar brings over 30 years of creative expertise across the Netherlands and India. An art historian (M.A., Leiden University), she bridges cultures and corporate worlds, with fluency in six languages. Her career spans teaching, dictionary production, exhibition design, and restoring paper. For 15 years, she led the Dutch Government’s trade office in Ahmedabad, expanding its mission beyond trade. A pragmatic activist, she builds networks, advises non-profits, and champions “learning by doing,” applying creativity to navigate complex challenges in public and private sectors.

Architects Anjali and Kiran Kalamdani Revitalize Wadas of Pune

Architects Anjali and Kiran Kalamdani graduated from the BKPS College of Architecture in Pune in 1985 and later earned their Master of Architecture in Urban Design from the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi. After working for a year in Delhi, they travelled to England, where Kiran completed his Master of Arts in Conservation Studies at the University of York, while Anjali worked as an architect for the York City Council. They founded their practice in Pune - Kimaya’ - specializing in Architecture, Urban Design, Conservation, and Interior Design, and have completed over 200 notable projects. Here, we explore their important work in preserving the wadas of Pune and the relevance of traditional architecture today.

Laser & Sound Miracle

An Immersive 3D Mapping Project at Shamlaji Temple

To promote spiritual tourism, the Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board chose the Shamlaji Temple for an upgrade with a laser and sound show. Curated by industry experts Rhino Engineers, a firm led by Mr. Narendra Naidu, the beautiful exterior form of the temple comes alive using the technology of ‘3D projection mapping’. An electrical engineer with a degree in Management, Mr. Naidu has a field experience of over 41 years in MEP, AV, and Multimedia Technology. Some of his other significant projects include the world’s second largest 1.3KM length dam Light and Sound Show (Kevadiya), 10.3KM Motif and Gantry Lighting at Statue of Unity (Kevadiya), India’s first Glow Garden at Statue of Unity (Kevadiya), India’s largest area Projection Mapping on Natural Rock Surface (Ambaji), and Projection Lighting at Shri Ram Mandir (Ayodhya).
